We arrived at the airport late in the afternoon, where we met Bryan Wade, the owner of BBA (Borneo Biking Adventures) who was waiting for us. After a quick introduction we went for dinner in a local bar and chatted about what we wanted to do on our trip. This was really easy because of Bryan’s local knowledge and easy going laid back personality. After about ten minutes it was like chatting with an old mate.
He took us to our accommodation which absolutely blew our minds. What a place! WOW! 1400ft above sea level overlooking the South China Sea. Our hosts for the next week Terry and Rose Mills of Sinurambi B & B. Wonderful people, we were treated like old friends straight away. We settled into our awesome self contained home away from home.
Next morning after a superb breakfast we headed off for a familiarization ride on two wicked Aprilia 650 Pegasus’. Bryan quickly assessed our riding ability and was happy to take us straight into the mountains, where we rode one of the most magnificent roads I have ever seen. Winding in and out of the mountains. ( let me tell you Bryan is no slouch on a bike. This man can ride! Being a former professional team rider for Suzuki and Husqvarna his tips are invaluable!)
Stopped for lunch with locals and sampled local food and culture. Awesome! Then off to do more miles.
The point and follow system of Bryan is the right approach which gave us the freedom to ride how we wanted to stop to take photos etc as we wanted.
After one of the best riding days ever I was exhausted and we went back to our private mountain retreat where refreshments were waiting for us when we got there. Then a spectacular feast for dinner.
Day two was another well organized days ride covering about 280kms, taking in local treats and excellent roads, some great conversation and ride tutoring from the Master (Bryan).
Day three and four was an overnight ride to the tip of Borneo, where we spent the night in rustic accommodation on the beachfront. My wife and I took in some local highlights, beach walking and then off to ‘Howards’ for dinner.
The next day we took a different route back to KK. A big day’s ride and another fantastic night and dinner with our new friends Terry and Rose.
Bryan wisely recommended we have a rest day before heading off to Sandakan, Sukau, and Kinabatangan River on day six for a three day ride. Our luggage was carried by Bryan’s side kick and mechanic ‘Robbie’ complete with a spare bike, tools, wheels etc just in case.
A couple of awesome days riding was had by all. My wife, Bryan and myself weaved and wandered through the countryside like long time riding friends, taking in all the native animals in their natural environment (too many to list).
I would like to say for me the way this ride was tailored it covered everything we wanted and more; local culture, food, unbelievable country, roads, great bikes, new friends and an awesome adventure to be remembered.
THANKS Bryan!
See you next year.
